The tiny village of Ke’anae sits far out into the sea, and was wiped out in near-entirety by a tsunami on April 1, 1946. The waves arrived with no warning, peaked at 35 feet, and took every structure except for this 162-year-old stone church. Twenty-four people were killed, after which the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was created in Oahu.
